Press Release:  Blessings of Liberty

Rockwall, Texas – Beginning September 1, the Rockwall County Historical Foundation will present “The Blessings of Liberty:  The U.S. Constitution,” an exhibition prepared for travel by Humanities Texas, the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.

“The Blessings of Liberty” is an exhibition that examines the document upon which our country was founded:  The United States Constitution.  Written to “secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our Posterity,” the Constitution is short, simple and often ambiguous.  As the blueprint for our nation’s government, it represents a set of beliefs and a way of life.  The exhibition seeks to explain the immense importance of a document that holds answers to challenging questions of government, crypit though it may seem.

Developed by a national consortium of scholars and institutions, “The Blessings of Liberty” consists of twelve poster panels addressing the transformation of the United States from a group of colonies to a nation united by a single document.

A private collection of historic memorabilia of George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, drafters of the Constitution, along with Benjamin Franklin, a representative at the Constitution Convention will also be displayed.  Students will have an opportunity to “vote” for their favorite statesman in the exhibit.

The free display will be open to the public at the Bailey House, 903 E. Washington St. in Harry Myers Park from September 1 to September 30 during regular Museum hours.  (Tuesday through Friday 1:00 m to 5:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.)  For more information about viewing hours or to arrange group visits, contact Museum Curator at 972-722-1507 or rockwallhistory@gmail.com or visit the website at rchfonline.org.

Humanities Texas develops and supports diverse programs across the state, including lectures, oral history projects, teacher institutes, museum exhibitions and documentary films.  For more information, please visit Humanities Texas online at http://www.humanitiestexas.org. or call 512-440-1991.
